Helsinki Townhouse
Architecture competition proposal, 2010
Max Hartman, Janne Lainea and Tommy Kaj Lindgren

The competition was held to find ideas for housing types for two areas in Helsinki. Both were by the sea and parts of larger, new, developments. The program called for "townhouse"-typologies - fairly small units with their own yards that could be inhabited by single families.

The proposal combines a pleasant microclimate on the courtyard sides with maximum views and light on the side of the water - first by tilting the plane of the roof so that the buildings are approximately 3 stories high on the outer perimeters but diminish to a height of a single story facing the courtyard, and secondly by staggering the volumes so that views are opened towards two different cardinal directions.
